Struggle of power:
Characters:
Jack: "I'm going up the mountain." The words came from Jack viciously, as though
they were a curse. He looked at Ralph, his thin body tensed, his
spear held as if he threatened him.
"I'm going up the mountain to look for the beast- now."
Then the supreme sting, the casual, bitter word. "coming". Pg. 131

EvenT :
The struggle for power has been evident throughout the whole
novel; however it is very evident in this chapter. The beast has been a fear of
the boys, so Jack decided it was time to go up the mountain and explore and
find the beast once and for all. Ralph however wanted to go let Piggy know
what’s was happening but Jack just wanted to go. Jack used the power in his
voice and the control he had over the boys to gain more authority.
However, Ralph didn’t want to let Jack walk all over him. Ralph
was not keen on going up the mountain as there was very little sunlight and hunting
the beast was not the best idea. Ralph realized that society values
strength and he can’t be seen as a coward for opting out of the hunt.
Therefore this shows the power struggle that went on between Jack and Ralph
because neither of them wanted to lose any form of the power they had.
